The highly anticipated sequel to the groundbreaking animation adventure "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" is finally here to further revolutionize the superhero genre. "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" builds off the enthralling first film in a number of exciting ways and features even more mind-blowing cameos that further tie the multiverse together. To defeat his new archenemy the Spot (Jason Schwartzman), Miles (Shameik Moore) must travel across dimensions to avert a total catastrophic collapse. Unfortunately, when he attempts to return home, a miscalculation transports him to a completely different universe with dark and unforeseen consequences.

Throughout his extraordinary journey, Miles and his close friend Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld) encounter an abundance of captivating Spider-Man variants including the enormous dinosaur, Spider-Rex. However, not all are friendly towards them like the villainous Miguel O'Hara, aka Spider-Man 2099 (Oscar Issac), who reveals the harsh truth about the origin of Miles' powers. This discovery comes alongside the explanation of canon events which are incidents in every hero's story that can't be averted.

These include familiar notable events like the inciting spider bite, the loss of a close loved one, and the death of a beloved police captain, which drives Miles' desperation during the film's concluding moments. To save his newly promoted father, he races back to his world on Earth-1610 but instead finds himself confronted with an antagonistic version of himself on Earth-42.

After Miles forcefully announces his intention to alter the canon event, he becomes a target of every present being in the Spider Society. In his mind-boggling escape from Miguel's headquarters, he leaps into the machine capable of interdimensional travel. Although, as the raving Spider-Man 2099 tells Miles, his genetically modified spider originated from a different universe, which is what the device uses to identify the return route.

This unique factor connects the two villains of the film as a result of Miles' unprecedented breakthrough. Though Miles was unaware at the time, Dr. Jonathan Ohnn was present during his dazzling showdown with the Kingpin (Liev Schreiber), which transformed him into the Spot. Additionally, Ohnn was also an employee of Alchemax, the very same facility that Miles' life-changing spider (aptly labeled 42) came from.

After witnessing Miguel's madness over the multiversal events, Spider-Byte (Amandla Stenberg) gives Miles a helpful hand with the machine that finally sends him back...or so we thought. The young web-slinger is transported to the same universe his gifted arachnid came from which is the neo-noir Earth-42 that has clearly suffered without their own version of the hero.

On Earth-42, Miles races against the clock across the stormy city until he finally makes his way to the Morales' residence. He unexpectedly encounters his Uncle Aaron Davis (Mahershala Ali), who died in the first film as the antagonizing Prowler, and gives him a tight hug. Davis' presence sets us up for an even darker surprise waiting for viewers which is the revelation of Earth-42's version of the Prowler.

After Miles' suspicious reaction to seeing his uncle, and the youngster's out-of-character hairstyle, Davis realizes something is wrong and captures Earth-1610's Miles. When he wakes up in his dire situation, he's face to face with the villain he unknowingly created in an alternate version of himself. Since the captive Miles received Earth-42's spider bite, he never became Spider-Man, which led him down a sinister path with his corrupt uncle.

This left Earth-42 without a Spider-Man to protect them, which explains the gloomy and crime-ridden atmosphere. The unsuspected reveal perfectly sets up "Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse" by putting Miles' up against his most formidable foe yet. Even though the film lacks a post-credit scene, this leaves audiences eagerly anticipating the next installment to witness their sure-to-be epic face-off.
